The Last Flight by Julie Clark - Book Review

Wow! What an amazing, breathtaking ride! This was a thriller that I could not put down! I loved the alternating chapters between Eva and Claire's perspective. All questions were answered in the best way possible!

Is it possible for one to disappear? To completely shed their identity that they've lived all their life and to take on a new one? This novel explores that thought with some dark twists and turns! Claire Cook is married to Rory Cook, who is a well-off man and the Cook family are very well-known, specifically in the political world. Rory's mother was once part of the Senate; think the Kennedy's. Claire came from humble beginnings, so when she marries into the Cook family, she's excited; thinking this is going to be the start of an amazing, lavish life. What she doesn't know is how Rory really is behind closed doors.

It doesn't take long for Rory to begin abusing Claire, both verbally and physically. Claire is kept on a strict, tight schedule which is monitored by her assistant, Danielle. Claire doesn't really have any freedom to truly live her life and do things that she wants to do. So, she begins going to the gym secretly in the mornings, where she meets and befriends another woman named Petra. She soon confides in Petra about her desires to run away and leave Rory for good. Petra helps her come up with a plan. Claire has an upcoming flight to Detroit for an event. While she's there, she plans to "disappear" and start life over, with the help of the fake ID and other fake documents that Petra helped Claire get.

At the last minute, Rory changes his mind and tells Claire that he's going to do the event in Detroit and instead she'll be going on a flight to Puerto Rico, to help out with hurricane relief efforts. Just like that, her plans are out the window and it's like a punch to the gut. She also had her fake ID documents mailed to the hotel she would have been staying at in Detroit already, so it's only a matter of time before Rory finds them and discovers what her true intentions are. The last thing Claire wants is to end up like Maggie Moretti, Rory's ex-girlfriend who mysteriously was found dead at the bottom of the staircase in her house, which was set on fire.

Having no other choice, Claire gets driven to the airport and kills time at the airport bar. It's while she's sitting at the bar nursing a drink, thinking her life is doomed, that a beacon of light comes to her. Here is where she meets Eva. Eva conjures up a story about how she's also desperate and on the run. She convinces Claire to switch identities, even down to their clothes and purses. They swap plane tickets and Eva goes on the flight to Puerto Rico, while Claire get's on Eva's flight to Oakland. What Claire doesn't know is what Eva is truly running from and just how dangerous it is. To make matters worse, the flight going to Puerto Rico that Claire was supposed to be on, crashes and all passengers on board die. Everyone thinks Claire is dead, meanwhile she's living in Eva's old apartment as Eva.

I won't say anything else, other than this is a thriller that I recommend to everyone! This was a heart-pounding read that I was racing through to finish and learn how it ends. Secrets are uncovered and lies are unraveled. Such an amazing read!

FINAL RATING: 5/5 STARS

Until next time bookworms,

xoxo
