Mazie by Melanie Crowder - Book Review

This book started off great and I loved watching Mazie grow and really come into her own. It was a tough transition going from a small-town Nebraska girl to making it big in NYC. At times it seemed impossible, but she constantly proved everyone wrong (even herself) and showed that she can really make it on her own, while still staying true to herself.

Here's the synopsis:

"Mazie has always longed to be on Broadway. But growing up in her small Nebraska town, in 1959, that always seemed like an impossible dream. So when an opportunity presents itself to spend six weeks auditioning, Mazie jumps at the chance, leaving behind everything - and everyone - she's ever known.

New York City is a shock to the senses: thrilling, but lonely. Auditions are brutal. Mazie's homesick and she misses the boyfriend whose heart she broke when she left.

Nothing is as she expected.

With money running out, and faced with too many rejections to count, Mazie is more determined than ever to land a role. But when she discovers that booking a job might mean losing sigh of herself, everything Mazie always thought she wanted is called into question."

The middle of the book is where it dragged for me. Mazie's character was starting to become a little annoying, for lack of a better word. Every chapter seemed to end the same way; with her always lamenting about making it big and how she misses her family and her boyfriend, Jesse. It kind of seemed to say the same thing over and over again.

The ending was really cute and endearing. It also got a bit boring with the descriptions of the industrial musicals. I was more interested in Mazie herself and her adventures and developing relationships with all of the interesting characters she met along the way. I wasn't so much interested in the actual plays she was doing, but that seemed to be the focus a lot of the time.

All in all, this was a fun, light read. I would recommend to those who love theatre and a heartwarming story about a small-town girl with dreams of making it in the big city.

Final rating: 3/5 stars

Until next time bookworms,

xoxo
